Good post, Jim. But unfortunately you have one point incorrect. The majority of Broker-owners in the NWMLS service area are NOT REALTORS (why, I don’t understand). About half of the Brokers in this region are not REALTORS. And since we do not have a REALTOR-owned MLS, they really don’t have any motivation to. It is actually difficult to explain to agents in this area why we don’t have tools that other REALTORS in other parts of the country has because they have a REALTOR-owned MLS and we don’t.
Pressure from the media and the public on the brokerages who control the MLS won’t do any good, either. They are very happy with the control they have on the NWMLS, and aren’t planning on giving it up any time soon. Take my word for it, some folks have been trying to change things for quite a while.

Thanks for the comments, Alyson! I should have talked more in my post about this point of the Broker-ownership vs. REALTOR-ownership and how that controls the NWMLS perspective. FWIW, I was assured by people at RPR that they would be willing to work with the NWMLS to make sure it’s non-REALTOR membership was not adversely affected and not violate any regulatory issues.
Pressure can sometimes work, too. It was pressure from agents that helped get the change in releasing the Open House data field to be published not too long ago. I know because I was one of them pressuring!
